Prior to the start of the September school year, we hold orientation for preschool families. A portion of the evening is spent in the classroom with your child’s teachers, as they discuss their class structure and answer individual questions. The second portion of the evening is spent as a group, where our Preschool director will go over school policies and procedures, introduce teachers, staff, and members of the Ministry Team, and answer individual questions.
In the days prior to the start of the September school year, we open up our Preschool classes so that children and parents can come “tour” and play in their new class. This is a great way for the children to get to meet their teachers before school starts, and begin to get comfortable with their new classroom environment that will be their home for the school year! The dates and times for our Open House are announced in the summer before school begins.
Our Pancake Breakfast, a fun annual family event, is held on the first Saturday of February. In addition to a delicious pancake breakfast, there are games, crafts, a silent auction, and more! Proceeds from the Breakfast benefit the Preschool Scholarship Fund and the General Fund.
Each month a restaurant hosts a fundraising day/evening for our preschool families. A percentage of sales comes back to our school.
This Preschool-wide event is held every spring. Our preschoolers artwork is proudly displayed and we come together for an evening devoted to celebrating all of the beautiful and inspired artwork that our preschoolers have created over the school year. A light meal is served, and then we have a special program—we’ve had magicians, musicians and other performers come to engage our children in a fun and interactive show!
An annual holiday event, we gather one evening in December at Books Inc. on Burlingame Avenue for an evening of story time, pajamas, and munchies! Wearing their pajamas, our preschool children are invited to come and listen to their preschool teachers read some of their favorite books. The bookstore stays open until 8:00 PM, and First Presbyterian Preschool will receive 20% of all profit made throughout the day. Friends and family are all welcome to join this pajama party!
Children are introduced in the classrooms to the KID POWER program in the fall. The teachers cover topics such as safety with words, protecting themselves from hurtful words, being powerful to be safe, awareness & confidence, setting appropriate boundaries, getting help to be safe and checking first to be safe. More information on Kid Power can be found at www.kidpower.org.
In the fall and spring, each child in the 3-year-old and Pre-K classes will have the opportunity to have a lunch date with his/her teachers. This will be a small group experience, in the classroom, with 4-5 children at a time. Both teachers will be present. The purpose of this lunch date is for the teachers to get to know your child better and spend some informal time together. This is a wonderful opportunity for language and social/emotional development.
Our Preschool believes in teaching our children early the value of community involvement and local mission volunteering. Each year our children and their families are invited to participate in First Presbyterian Church of Burlingame’s Faith in Action day, where we have engaged the children in various projects, including putting together dry soup kits and over 600 Christmas stockings for the CALL Center in Burlingame. Our classrooms also sponsor a Thanksgiving dinner each November. Children bring in items to contribute towards a Thanksgiving dinner for a local family.
In the summer leading up to the start of the school year, the Ministry Team organizes “Park Play-Dates” for each of the upcoming classes. This is a great way for parents and children assigned to the same class to meet at a local park and get to know one another in an informal setting prior to the start of the school year.
Throughout the year we plan several educational outings for our Pre-K classes. In the past we have gone to the pumpkin patch during the fall harvest, and in the spring, we have gone to Elkus Ranch in Half Moon Bay.
